Testimonials
Brian Johnson | President, Soil Consultants Inc.
Our firm has been a member for over 30 years, to be our voice to promote fair payment practices and lobby for subcontractors rights. No other Subcontracting Association has meetings at Local, State and National level lobbying on behalf of our members. The dues are virtually paid for by the affinity programs that save us thousands of dollars a year!

When I joined the ASA of SC in December 2010, it was for one major reason. I was being taken advantage of by a bigger site contractor that had skimped on their part of the job, and my work was not being considered by them or the GC! I was a sub of a sub on a big Wal-Mart job, and no one cared that this could put me out of business through no fault of my own. I was at the end of my rope, and someone suggested that I attend an ASA of SCMidlands Chapter meeting the next week. At that first meeting I saw the value in this association, and I had to join! I ended up consulting with Chuck McDonald, attorney with Robinson McFadden and Moore, the ASA of SC State Counsel as well as the Midlands Chapter attorney. And, as a result, we did recoup half of the money that site contractor owed me without going to court. I would not have been able to afford a top notch attorney like Chuck if I did not have this association on my side.

Since that time I have utilized many benefits and contacts afforded to me because of my membership. I love the ASAC and the ASA, and the ASA of the Carolinas will work for you as much as you will let it. There is safety and strength in numbers and this association has led the way in protecting us, the SUBCONTRACTORS THAT BUILD THIS NATION, for decades!

As a vendor I joined the ASA of SC to have the opportunity to meet new customers and socialize with current ones while attending the meetings and events. I continue to support the association because it has benefited me for the above reasons, but also allowed me to learn more about my customers business and issues that I did not know about. This allows me to have a more supportive role with my customer, and not just a sales representative. May Heavy continues to support the Charleston and the Midlands chapters because the membership base is related to our industry. We feel that it’s important as a vendor to show our customers and potential prospects that we want to be involved in like-minded causes. As the new President of the Midlands Chapter I find the benefit of being more involved means for me to give back to the association for all the help it gave me when I first got started in the Charleston market 4 years ago. Now I’m getting the same benefit in the Midlands Chapter, which is a market my company is strong in, but had no real market knowledge when I took over the Columbia office in April of this year.

Sometime, in the early “70’s”, I saw an announcement in the AGC Bulletin about a Subcontractor’s meeting in Charlotte. It said to call Cliff Worley for details. I called Cliff, who was a competitor of Buckner, and learned that he had formed a group of Subcontractors in Charlotte, and they had joined “The American Subcontractors Association”, based in Washington DC. At that time, there were only two people, Bob Pallazzo (a plumbing contractor), and his secretary, Perry Doubt, in the office. I started driving to Charlotte meetings each month, combining the trip with business. Shortly after, I learned that Robert “Bob” Roberson from David Allen Company in Raleigh was a National Member of ASA. We talked and decided to start a Chapter in Raleigh, and later, along with Cliff, traveled to Charleston to start a chapter. Buckner was a very small company and very much in need of the help that ASA offered, especially regarding “contract language”. I learned that we did not have to accept the “one-sided” contracts that most General Contractors sent us. Bob and I exchanged notes and talked frequently concerning changes we both were successful in getting GC’s to agree to. Bob is the most “contract knowledgeable” person that I know and was, along with ASA, a tremendous help in my struggles in those early years. I could not put a dollar value on what ASA has done for me.
